Let Yoga Melt Your Body Fat Away

It does not matter if you are thin or fat, if you are a middle aged man or a woman who has not been able to lose the pregnancy fat, one thing remains the same. There is just too much fat on the belly. Too much fat in the belly area can cause some pretty serious health problems. You might find yourself with high blood pressure, forms of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, sleeping better problems like sleep apnea, high sugar/diabetes, high risk for stroke, and in some cases even death. When you eat more than you exercise then you will be faced with belly fat.

Do you know where belly fat comes from?

There are many different reasons you might fall prey to belly fat. If you have a slow metabolism, tend to continue eating when you are full, experience too much stress, have frequent or chronic digestion problems, frequent bloating, or just that your food habits are bad. When you eat more than you exercise, the fat has no choice but to collect on your belly. For better digestion of food you should drink water on regular basis.

Yoga helps in reducing belly fat

You will have to learn how to eat properly while exercising frequently and applying yoga. By doing yoga along with your daily exercises your belly fat will start melting away along with any fat that might be around your body organs.

Reduction of fat can be greatly reduced by participating the Yoga Asanas and Pranayamas. Stress can sneak right into the body and cause belly fat, now you can kick the stress back out by applying Pranayam along with Yoga. When you are trying to burn the stomach, abdominal, or belly fat with asanas and yoga you will need to start gradual. Just like any exercise you want to start slowly and work your way up to the more aggressive exercises. As you are proceeding along with yoga one thing you will notice is there are not any terrible side effects from exercising this way. One thing to note is when you are first starting out you will probably not be very flexible. Do not get discouraged and quit because overtime the body will become flexible and the exercises will seem effortless.

Belly fat will vanish before your eyes with Exercises and Yoga

When you are doing yoga, it is best not to lie directly on the floor. Instead use a mat or even a towel for lying on. Once the mat or towel is in place you will want to lie flat on your back. Now slowly start to lift your leg and bend the knee. The objective is to get your knee as close to the chest as possible then hold it there for 30 seconds. Now lower the leg back down so it is flat again. You can do this with one leg at a time or you can try to do both legs at the same time.

Now roll over to your stomach and lay flat. Relax your hands on the side of your body so the arms and fingers are running parallel with your spine. Now keeping your hands by your side proceed to lift your head and upper torso in the air as far as you can. Once you have hit your limit on height hold it for at least 30 seconds. Then relax and lower back down until you are lying flat on the floor again. It will feel like you are only using the back muscles but rest assure those stomach muscles are working also so you can get rid of the fat in the stomach area.

Yoga and asanas is the art of working your body out naturally. Over a course of time the abdominal, stomach, and belly fat will start disappearing as long as you are doing the exercises on a regular basis.

Fitness and Weight Loss With Yoga

As a form of exercise and fitness (and yes, as means to help you lose weight), yoga is by something to be considered. If you have been contemplating learning yoga or have recently begun yoga practice, I hope to present you with some useful and helpful tips for yoga beginners.

Although I’m more in to power lifting (probably because I was raised on a farm. Honest!), I do practice basic yoga because it keeps the muscles supple and I gain more overall flexibility and agility. That being said, what follows can help you gain or add to your knowledge of yoga.

There are three basic yoga poses you should learn and master:

  1. Sun Salutations pose: This is the core of yoga itself. This exercise combines breathing, sun bathing and prayer. It’s a combination of poses, 12 to be exact, and are performed in a synchronized motion with emphasis on rhythmic breathing. Mildly exercising the arms and legs, the poses are often recommended for obesity, depression and fitness. For beginners, this will be a guaranteed must know. Think of it as the warm up part of your routine.
  2. The Shoulder Stand pose: Don’t be frightened by the name. This pose is easy even for a beginner. It’s a very important pose and arguably, the most important. The Sanskrit name (Savangasana) means the "all members" or "all limbs" pose; meaning, it has an impact on all parts of the body. Some poses, such as the Shoulder Stand, do have unique counter poses. As a beginner, make sure you are taught these poses to counteract and balance the effects of the Shoulder Stand. The counteract poses are the bridge and fish poses. Here’s a hint of the ratio you should strive for in their combined execution: 6:1:2. This simply means that the bridge and fish poses should be held for a sixth and third of the time respectively that you spend in the shoulder stand pose.
  3. The Corpse Pose: As the pose implies by its name, it is done lying down. This is a relaxation pose which is normally accomplished somewhere within, and, after your regime. It is a method of relaxing the muscles used for your yoga exercises. The most difficult element of this pose, is concentration. Through concentration, you are training your mind to relax your body.

Those are the three main poses you really should learn to perfect. However, there are other poses that should be included as you progress. Each of these additional pose groups have several variations on the three root poses. Here’s a little secret. Do at least 24 repetitions of Sun Salutations and the ease in executing additional poses will come almost naturally. Trust me.

One other factor that I must stress is that if you follow a healthy eating plan, you will not only gain strength, but will speed the process of weight loss (if that is indeed, one of your goals).

Though yoga for beginners may best be learned from an instructor, your own systematic approach and practice will determine your mastery. There are tons of books, television broadcasts, local classes and DVD’s available. Moreover, bear in mind that as a beginner doing yoga, unless you intend to do lots of Sun Salutations, you might want to incorporate some body weight resistance poses such as Hindu push ups and the Bridge.

Doing yoga is fun, stimulating and amazingly rewarding for lots of reasons that may have you researching it. Choosing yoga will go a long way into making for a fitter and healthier you.

3 Ways to Improve Your Health

It is important for you to know about what is killing us and how we can prevent and in some cases cure these diseases. I first got interested in using alternative methods in combination with western medicine in the early 1980′s when my 14 month old niece came down with what the doctors thought was pneumonia.

I stood by her bedside in the ICU and watched this beautiful little child not yet 2 years old struggling to stay alive. She was in one of the major hospitals in the country and they couldn’t help her. The doctors came to my brother-in-law at one point and said that they had tried everything they knew how to do. She had been seen by all of the major hospitals in the area and they were all baffled by what was going on with her.

My brother-in-law came to me and asked what he should do. He came to me because I was the weird one in the family that was into alternative ways of healing. I suggested that he find the best holistic doctor he could and have them take a look at her. At this point, there was nothing to lose. Every time the doctors tried to get her off the medication that was keeping her alive, she would start to fail.

A holistic doctor was called in and he took tests of her hair, nails, etc. He plotted his course of treatment, she started to respond and eventually recovered from what was making her ill. The doctors at the hospital and the holistic doctor worked together to make this happen.

All of this got me to thinking about the importance of combining alternative treatments with our western medical practices. It never made sense to me that western medicine was the end all to recovery when Chinese medicine and other practices have been around for thousands of years. It is a little bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water, if we don’t look at all of these practices. So over the years it has become more and more obvious to me that we need to connect these practices if we want to free ourselves from:

Stress
Hypertension
Heart Disease
Osteoporosis
And even Cancer

Oh, by the way, you may be wondering what my niece had that western medicine couldn’t cure her and an alternative approach did. She had a build up of lead in her system.

I think this experience opened a number of people’s eyes to the fact that there is more than one way to look at curing our diseases. The holistic practitioner that my brother-in-law got to take care of my niece was asked to speak to the doctors at this major hospital. This was an encouraging beginning.

Getting back to the use of alternative ways to increase your health, flexibility, and longevity, I can think of three proven ways to do this:

Yoga
Meditation
Pilates

Let me explain. Yoga for instance has been practiced for more than 3000 years. There must be something to it if it has been around that long. It helps you to maintain or regain your flexibility, strength, and balance. As an aging person myself, I know how important these benefits are to my well-being. This is just a drop in the bucket for the many benefits that the practice of Yoga can help you with in regaining your optimal health. It can help control or even cure the various illness that are plaguing our society today. I came across a report that showed 77 ways that the practice of Yoga will benefit us. After every report I read, it was more and more plain to me that the practice of Yoga was going to be a major part of my life. We would be crazy not to do it.

An integral part of a Yoga practice is Meditation.

I know when I meditate my day has a more balanced feel to it. The other day I was in a deep mediation, the phone rang and it brought me back to this plane rather quickly. The rest of the day I didn’t quite feel like my feet or body for that matter were in this world. It was a very peaceful day although a little unreal. I guess there is a reason they tell you to meditate in a quiet place without interruptions.

I have always connected exercise with Meditation. When I exercise, I Meditate. The benefits you can get from Meditating are lowering oxygen consumption, decreases respiratory rate, Increases blood flow to mention just a few. There are so many more.

Pilates is another practice with increased benefits to your health and well-being.

What got me to start doing Pilates several times a week was when I found out that Susan Lucci of "All My Children" fame has been practicing Pilates for over 15 years. When she was on the Oprah Show she told Oprah that she is 62 years old and in my mind she looks and acts at least 20 years younger. That was all it took to get me interested.

Once I started to practice Pilates, I found that my back and joints in particular were much improved and being a 64 year old woman who is a bit over weight (working on that) it makes me feel incredible. (I am losing weight too AND getting into better shape at the same time!) What you will gain from doing Pilates are whole body fitness, it is adaptable to any fitness level, creates strength with out bulk and many more benefits.

As you can see the enormous benefits you will get from these three practices (Yoga, Meditation, and Pilates). Some of the benefits are similar with each practice. It seems to me that one improves on the other. With the research that I have done, it has been made very clear to me that in order to live a long, active, and health lifestyle, I must maintain my practice of Meditation, Yoga, and Pilates. As a senior citizen who has just started these practices in the last few years, I really wish I had started sooner but it is never too late.

Yoga Is Easier With the Proper Equipment

Like all other exercise forms, it is also desirable that you have the right gear and equipment for your yoga exercises. Though yoga is one of the easiest and most hassle-free form of exercising it helps to have the right clothes, gear and mats.

Equipment Basics

Clothes: When you are doing yoga do not wear tight clothes. Instead make sure they are loose-fitting and comfortable. It is best to make sure the shirt kind of grabs the hip area since with yoga there are many exercises and you do not want your shirt flying over your head. You can wear shorts or even a pair of pants for doing yoga in. One thing to make sure of though is that the pants are not made of a material that will cause you to slip when exercising. If you are not sure what to wear then you could even purchase a pair of yoga pants that will fit a little snug but, still allow you to move freely.

Shoes: You will not have to worry about your feet sweating and which shoes you should wear. The best shoes are no shoes, in other words you will be doing the exercises barefooted. If you are doing the exercises at a studio then the instructor will ask that all shoes are left by the door.

Mats: When doing yoga it is more common to use the yoga mat or what some call a sticky mat. Considering when you are exercising it is only common to start sweating. If you are just standing on a wooden floor then the chances are high that eventually you will slip and hurt yourself. If you have the mat down then it will help you keep the proper traction so there will not be any slipping around. It is also nice to have some cushion under your feet while doing yoga. The yoga mats are very inexpensive and usually cost around 20 dollars. If you are not sure that this type of exercise is something that will be continued then talks with the studio and see if there are mats for renting.

Equipment that is Optional

If you find yourself doing a yoga style called Iyengar then you will be happy to hear this is going to teach you poses but, the proper alignment as well. It is important that you are careful when first starting out. The body is going to take some time for getting in the proper alignment and this is why it is usually recommended that props are used. If the yoga is being done in a studio then the props are provided but, if the exercises are being done in the comfort of your home then you might think about purchasing some.

Blankets: If you are going to a studio for yoga classes then you will be relieved to know they have blankets on hand for everyone to use. It is usually recommended that you grab at least two. They are good for elevating parts of the body higher than others so the exercises will give the proper workout. Another great thing about having a blanket is when you are done working out then you will do some relaxation exercises. At this time you have usually worked up a sweat and will start to chill, just grab the blanket and wrap it around you so you can warm up.

Blocks: Another form of a prop is using the blocks. These are usually used when you are required to bend over but, not actually touch the floor.

Straps: The reason you would use a strap is for the bound poses. This would be if the hands cannot reach each other or if you need to grab your feet but just cannot get all the way there.

Yoga Can Help in the Labor Room During Delivery

When a woman first learns she is pregnant there is joy and excitement. Then the thought of giving birth to a healthy baby pops into the brain. No one said carrying a baby for 9 months and then giving birth was going to be easy. That is why practicing yoga on regular basis can help. The muscles will start becoming toned which also helps with balancing and circulation of air through the body, additionally yoga will also make the joints limber and less stiff as your pregnancy progresses.

Doing different poses in yoga will help you learn to breathe properly and relax. When you are in the labor room giving birth your breathing is what you concentrate on in between the labor pains. The proper pushing and breathing technique is how the baby pushes out of the womb. If you start to panic though and become scared, because this is your first little one, the whole process can stop. The body produces a chemical called oxytocin that aids in the labor process. When oxytocin is not being produced then it will take longer for the baby to make its appearance.

In order to learn how to focus the mind, relax, and make the heart rate slow down practice meditation. This will actually help you get through those intense moments while starting birth.

With a baby steadily growing in your stomach it could throw you off balance if bending backwards or even bending too far forward. It is recommended that you refrain from doing either of these poses while pregnant.

It does not matter if you are just starting to do the inversion poses or if you have been doing them for a long time, after the second trimester you will need to stop. Also remember to relax and there is no need for holding the pose forever.

With yoga there are some poses that are done by lying on the back. Some women will feel comfortable doing these all the way through their pregnancy. Keep in mind when you are laying on the back for any amount of time then the vena cava vein can start acting up. This is one of the main veins that grabs the blood in your legs and pulls it back to the heart. When the vein becomes affected you will experience nausea, your breath will become short, and you could become dizzy. It is not recommended that you do these exercises especially if you are more than 20 weeks pregnant.

Trimester One
It is always recommended to listen to the body as you do yoga. There are no restrictions yet but, the routine will eventually be modified.

Trimester Two
The belly is starting to expand which means you could easily lose your balance. So slow down and gradually go into the yoga positions since your joints are loosening. Once in the pose only hold it for a short amount of time.

Trimester Three
As the stomach is expanding you will have the opportunity for losing your balance even more. It is recommended to place your heels against the wall for balance and perform standing exercises.

Different Types of Yoga For Different Needs

When people are trying something different for a short period of time they tend to come up with all kinds of excuses for stopping the routine. With yoga people like to say they did not care for it even though they only tried it one time. Then there is the typical, "flexibility and my body did not work well together." The best excuse used is they quit exercising because yoga hurt their body. If you are not use to exercise then of course the body is going to hurt until it becomes use to it.

Over a thousand of years ago in the country India yoga was born. When the exercises were first practiced it is amazing to see how flexible the people were back then and how they could bend their bodies. Over the years as the bodies were not worked the same they became less flexible and the lifestyles became more demanding. This is why the yoga ritual has changed some over the years so more people could enjoy the benefits of it.

The West first started seeing yoga appear around 100 years ago. As the exercises became more poplar then there were some things added to the traditional way of exercising with yoga.

There are a variety of different styles in yoga but, here are some that are used by many today:

Styles of Yoga: From spiritual to completely physical there is yoga for everyone to enjoy. Yoga can be hard for a variety of people since there are some exercises that are challenging aerobically that even the fittest people have a hard time doing the exercises. Another reason someone might call it quits is because they become bored with the meditative and slow techniques.

Styles for Teaching: When joining yoga class there might be an instructor in the front of the room that is demonstrating the different techniques. As the instructor is showing the moves the class is expected to follow along. Then there are some instructors that will show how to do the technique then walk around and help anyone that is having difficulties. Finally there are even instructors that will just tell the steps for doing the exercise and the class is expected to do their best.

Expertise of Instructors: There are two different kinds of instructors here. There is the one that was taught and can actually do the poses so they share with the class. Then there are instructors that just know how to do the different poses and were not taught by anyone.

Instructors Training: The majority of instructors have taken a class where they are taught how to do the poses. It could be a class that just lasts for a weekend or it could be one that lasts for several months. Usually the instructor only learns one type of yoga and that is what is actually taught.

Before starting any classes it is best to see which age group the class is focusing on. It just would not benefit an athlete to take classes that are for middle age and visa versa.

Several Exciting Benefits of Hot Yoga

Nothing can deny the fact that the increasing popularity of yoga has led to the development of new forms and techniques. Several claims are made about the benefits of hot yoga. These notions are often publicized by passionate hot yoga devotees who are expressing their love of the program of their guru. They may be curious as to why yoga performed in warmer and more humid conditions is better for their bodies.

What is hot yoga?
Hot yoga has all the essential positions that yogis are familiar with. Nevertheless, classes take place in studios where the temperature is set at 105 degrees Fahrenheit (or 41 degrees Celsius). Classes are usually an hour and thirty minutes and they comprise poses and breathing exercises.

How does it prove to be beneficial for people?
The benefits of this type of yoga lie directly in the temperature of the rooms. Bikram Choudhury, who is the founder of Bikram’s yoga, believed that hot conditions allowed for immense flexibility and circulation, and if we talk about cold conditions, circulation is restricted due to the fact that blood is concentrated around the body’s crucial organs (heart and lungs). The extremities receive less blood because of the reason they are necessary in order to survive. Because the extremities receive enough blood flow and the muscles are kept warm, the body’s flexibility also enhances. This makes performing poses a much easier task. Individuals can stretch their bodies in positions they would normally not be able to reach.

Yoga is a thinking discipline originating that merges the spiritual, physical and mental processes to reach a state of peace and spiritual illumination. You may undoubtedly have seen or a few of the common yoga postures like the lotus, the frog or the downward dog. When it comes to trying them, it is different in general. It takes tremendous flexibility, concentration and discipline in order to master any yoga routine.

Hot yoga benefits your body when it is being performed within a heated location. It benefits your body because it assists your body in sweating out toxins while allowing you the practitioner to safely come deeper into asanas (poses or stretches). The room heat for a hot yoga session can stretch from approximately 30° to 50° C (85° to 125° F). Humidity can extend from 40% to 60%. It benefits your body and psyche by means of meditation and works outstandingly well to achieve harmony helping the mind act in synchronization with the body.

My Sweaty Adventure With Bikram Yoga

"Breathe deeply, suck in your stomach and twist, twist, twist", said Yuri, in her Brazilian accent. Her perfectly fit and flexible body testified of the benefits of this torture. Sweat dripped off my body to the towel below, preventing my yoga mat from becoming a slip and side. Yes, I do Yoga. Better yet, I’m learning to survive it.

Several weeks ago I signed up to take a Bikram Yoga class, or Hot Yoga. I’ve attended a class or two in the past but decided to jump in and take advantage of a summer special. To be honest, it’s a rather miserable experience. A friend that I dragged with me the first day refused to come back. However, after tackling the recommended one class a day for 5 days to push through the learning curve, I **gasp** discovered that I liked it.

I also discovered that mostly fit people do Yoga. "Why is that?" I wondered in class one day. As I stared at my reflection in the mirror I tried to look past the red face, matted wet hair and jiggly belly to visualize my potential. Perhaps the 105 degree temperature and 40% humidity literally melts the fat off people. Or maybe its the thunderous beating of my heart by just standing in the heated room that helps to burn calories. Whatever the reason, it works. Within a week or two I feel so much better.

One thing for certain is the need to hydrate before the class starts. Newbies often nurse on a water bottle kept within arms reach. I did too. Instructors recommend not drinking water at all until after warming up. Then the entire class takes the first drink of water together. I learned the secret of staying hydrated several weeks later. While toweling off after a workout a woman next to me said, "the secret is to chug 2 large classes of water 20 minutes before class. And, if you’ve timed it correctly, you shouldn’t feel compelled to empty your bladder during class either."

One more important tip is to wear as little clothing as possible. This can be a little intimidating. If you’re dealing with extra weight around the hips or tummy find a loose t-shirt and go for it. However, be aware that within a short time all clothing is soaked and stuck like glue to your body.

In the meantime, my adventures in Hot Yoga continue. I’ve discovered that after years of neglect I have biceps. And although my muscular body is still well padded, I will be learning to focus, relax and meditate myself into better health. Namaste."

How Yoga Can Improve Your Tennis Play

Have you ever watched a cat when it is getting ready to attack something? It is able to move swiftly close to the ground while not extending their muscles all the way out as it grabs the prey. When playing tennis this is the same type of movement that is required in order to return the ball back to the opponent. If you are not properly stretching out the muscles then eventually they are going to lose the elasticity in them. Yoga is able to keep the elasticity in the muscles stretched properly while still letting you dash from one end of the court to the other.

When playing tennis you are causing the muscles to be tense while waiting for the next move. Yoga will teach your muscles how to let the tension go so you can play an even better game.

Think about when you are on the field and your knees are slightly bent you are like the cat and ready to pounce. Only difference is every muscle is tense and one wrong move and there is an injury. Take the time and train your muscles so they always start in a position that is relaxed.

Yoga has breathing exercises that concentrate on your stamina and endurance. It is a habit for people to hold their breath for a few seconds in hopes that it will give them more strength. In the long run it is just wearing you out quicker then if your body knew how to breathe properly for creating the strength that is needed to make it through the complete match.

Yoga is all about the proper way of breathing while holding the various poses. When you are getting ready to assume a pose this is when you want to exhale. When doing properly you will actually feel the full length of the muscle stretching out. When doing the exercises it is not about holding your breath, it is mandatory that you breathe just like normal. You can hold a pose for as little as 30 seconds before gradually assuming the starting position. Over time you will actually find yourself breathing just like you do when exercising.

If you need more flexibility in your hips, back, and shoulders then try a spine twist. Remember to practice the proper breathing.

For the spine twist you are going to need to sit on the floor flat on your bottom. Now while relaxing your legs, stretch them directly in front of your body. Take your time and while keeping your spine straight bend your left leg and slowly move it across your right knee and on the other side. Balance your body by putting the left hand flat on the floor behind you. Now try and take your right hand and slowly place it on your left hip.

There is another part to the pose so while holding all the positions you have so far start exhaling and slowly turn your head and upper body to your left. The objective is to look over your left shoulder. Try and hold the pose for about 30 seconds then slowly come back to the start position. If you have problems doing the pose do not get discouraged just keep practicing and you will get it with practice.

Improve Your Life With Yoga Poses

If we as people could be more like yoga we would be judgment free. This means that yoga is there to benefit anyone that would like to participate. The exercises do not care what class in the money chain you are, if you are funny shaped, too small or big, newly retired, or what your line of work is. In order to reap the benefits of yoga you will need to do it on regular bases and make sure the techniques are being done properly. There is a wide variety of different techniques available with yoga. If you are determined and focused on learning yoga you will find a technique that is best for you.

Did you know that yoga was documented over 5,000 years ago on paper? This could be one of the oldest forms of improvement for oneself that has ever existed. As with everything in history if something is not written down from day one then things will be missing. Passing something by word of mouth is nice but, people tend to turn things around so they benefit from it.

Man has always wanted to improve their body and make it stronger for handling the different elements. This means over all these years yoga has been tweaked here and there along the way so people can get the best out of it.

With using yoga daily the body and mind can work together better. Think about when you are at work just sitting there. Instead of doing the work you are letting your mind wander around. This means you are no longer being productive you are just flying around.

In order to expand your concentration, learn the proper breathing technique, along with postures that are physical, give yoga a try. Just one session will start to teach you all these things. Over time you will actually learn inner harmony. This consists of the body and mind bonding which means you will be more productive, organizational skills are enhanced, and you will have self preservation.

Everyone deals with stress and problems daily. What if there was a way to relieve yourself of these problems so you can handle them with a clear mind? That is exactly what yoga does. It teaches you to rid the mind and body of stress and tensions so you can function properly.

When yoga is conducted on a regular routine the mind will have energy. It is now able to find the solution to items that have just been resting there taking up space. There will even be new ideas that will come to mind for you to utilize.

An instructor can teach you how to remove the negative energy that has been occupying your mind. As you clear your mind from this energy that is negative you will start to see how many others around you have the same negative thoughts. It is best to try and help these people rid the thoughts from their mind. If it is an impossible task then the only other option is to not deal with them.
